KEY LESSON QUESTION |

Can you design and build a race car, using only paper and glue, plus axles, axle housings (cut straws) and wheels provided, that is both fast (for racing against other cars) and crashworthy (for protecting its occupant - a raw egg)?

Materials: 1 straw / 2 axles/ 3 sheets of paper / 4 wheels and glue
No tape, cardboard or other extra material allowed.

    3. Outcomes:
      1. Sketch up Visual Design Challenge (attempt to build using given materials)
      2. Vehicle built for speed and distance when racing down track
      3. Vehicle built for safety and strength - protects raw egg when crashed into a brick wall

  2. Each team member creates a slideshow of 10 very different but attractive cars using Google images and Google Slides
    (maybe homework)
  3. Create 2 potential designs in Google Sketchup

    2. Put final copy of GS drawing in your class folder in Google Drive.
  4. Work in teams to design physical prototype for competition

  1. Design and test a car for Distance and Acceleration
    1. Revisted teamwork rubric
    2. Revisted documentation rubric
    3. Class created Top 10 list of things that affect acceleration
  2. Redesign car for acceleration using knowledge from reflection discussion above
  3. Predict speed and placement from prior test runs
  4. Acceleration competition on track using timer (could use photogates)
  5. Predict speed and placement from prior test runs
  6. Redesign for second competition (iterative design)
  7. Groups documented twice a week with documentation prompts and rubric

3rd Car Design - Egg Crash Challenge
  1. Watch and discuss Crash video NSTA
  2. Does group have ideas based on previous 2 designs?
  3. Design must allow for easy removal and inspection of the egg.
  4. Groups documented twice a week with documentation prompts and rubric
  5. Work in teams to design physical prototype for competition
  6. Test run "crash" cars from mid point of track. Survivors can go onto top of track.
  7. Iterative design and rerun
  8. IDEA: Have students design box to crash into at end of track
